My role within Kier began in 2010 on a voluntary work experience basis, working on my days away from full time study at Sheffield Hallam University. Although this was unpaid work I took it upon myself to work hard and ensure I picked up as much experience and knowledge as I could on the way. The work experience role didn’t disappoint, I was working one of the largest projects Kier Construction Northern have ever undertaken, HMP Moorland, the ‘sister scheme’ to the large £200m super prison HMP Featherstone. The project was a £23m project in Doncaster, a very intricate and demanding scheme with numerous buildings including a 180 cell house block , an Education Block and the full refurbishment of the prison kitchen. My initial role was to assist the onsite commercial team with the re-measurement of subcontractor accounts, direct labour resources and the reconciliation of the materials on site. This hard work was rewarded in the spring of 2011, as Kier offered me an opportunity to work full time and become a member of the commercial team. Post HMP Moorland and Procurement Experience. Since becoming a full time employee of the Kier Construction Northern, I have been involved in a variety of different projects. After assisting with the final accounts at successfully completed HMP Moorland, I was given the opportunity to work in the buying department. Unlike many contractors within construction, Kier operate with a commercial team consisting of Buyers and Quantity Surveyors. The Buyers role profile is to procure both the subcontractors and the materials of a project, rather than giving the subcontract procurement responsibility to the Quantity Surveyor. Therefore, the importance of understanding procurement within Kier Construction is paramount to understand how we achieve our buying targets and subcontractor selection. I was part of our procurement team for over 9 months and it gave me a great overview of our how to procure both subcontractors and materials. This experience helped me carry out my next task - South Killingholme. South Killingholme Project - 33 Plots Traditionally at Kier Construction the building of houses is not something they would construct. However since the downturn in construction activity Kier Construction have had to diversify. The first housing project was the social housing scheme at South Killingholme. I was given the task to be project quantity surveyor for the scheme. I have been a part of the scheme from pre construction planning approval stage up to the present day. We are currently looking to successfully handover all 33 Plots 5 weeks early than programmed. Whilst being at South Killingholme I have demonstrated that I can competently manage the commercial interests of a construction project, and as of October 2013 I was rewarded with the promotion to Assistant Quantity Surveyor. I am immensely proud of the project and all my energy is spent on ensuring we achieve our targets and successfully handover to North Lincolnshire Homes. . |
