Reflection on experience

In this section I will review my experiences over the last year, reflecting on events and also achievements to date.
At Kier there are useful tools to help me proactively assess my own progress. Tools such as my Role Profile helps me understand the expectations of my particular role. On a annual basis I have a formal progress review called PPR (Personal Planning Review) with my line manager. Please click here to view my last PPR review .(Note that this is sensitive personal information) The PPR is an excellent barometer to understand your current position and help plan your future goals. In my last review I was commended on how I have progressed over the last year, however the need of futher experience is required before I can be considered for the promotion to Quantity Surveyor.

My experiences over the last year have been immensely beneficial to my career development. I have enjoyed being a part of the commercial team and have learned much more than I expected in such a small space of time. Being involved with a project from planning approval to handover has enabled me to gather experience in areas that I may not have otherwise had .
If the opportunity of social housing wasn't available I may have still been a Trainee Quantity Surveyor assisting a senior member of staff. Therefore, although my development has been halted in terms of contractual practice, my onsite experience of managing a project has been a fair compromise in my opinion. I am much more confident in my ability and I am more aware of my strengths. As my RICS critique has shown I am still quite some way off to be considered an industry standard quantity surveyor. I feel that within 18 months time , I will have had different project experience and my competence in my weaker areas will improve.
In terms of academic development the practical knowledge I have picked up whilst in full time employment has been very beneficial in understanding the modules at University. I am finding that my role at work is becoming increasingly more demanding and time to concentrate on University is difficult. The support structure in place at work helps with these time constraints where possible,to assist me in my studies.
Whilst over the summer I have also been improving my Health & Safety competence by attending CPD courses held by Kier ,(evidence 1 & evidence 2) Upon reflection this has been necessary learning to help me manage site and proactively assist good SHE practices in the workplace.
If I were to reflect on the year as a whole my professional development has been improved immensely when comparing it to 2011/12. Events such as agreeing contract variations and being involved with the site decisions has given me confidence in my ability as a professional.
